He fell in love with a Dayak and married her

A simple life in a peaceful environment. A far cry from city life. There will come a time when we will yearn to be in the wilderness, away from the concrete jungle - just to breathe in fresh air. I have been to one of these Dayak longhouses as a child, and tasted their tuak. Just a sip though, since the rice wine can intoxicate you really fast.

The Dayak family we visited were friendly and very courteous. They wore broad smiles and served us as if we were the important ones. But their race and culture is deeply rooted in the annals of Malaysian history, as they are the indigenous people of Sarawak, the ones who have unquestionable sovereignty over the land.

A soldier, a Hindu by religion, and a Indian by race, saw a pretty dayak bathing in the river. He was on a peacekeeping mission to safeguard the state from terrorists hiding in the jungle.

She was young and loved the river that flowed under the stilted longhouse. She played in its water, sang to the winds that spoke to her through the rustled leaves, while the trees bowed down as she sang, and the mountains echoed her voice to far-off places. She was studying to be a nurse. She lived within a mystical community, and spoke to kindred spirits.

Her eyes sought his and she saw that he was swayed by her carefree life. He used to visit her often from then on, and one day asked for her hand in marriage from the tribal chief. He allowed their union, and they were married in a dayak ceremony. Then he returned to his hometown in Kuala Lumpur, and married her in a Hindu ceremony. Together they built their life steeped in diversity and have three children today who are all grown up and graduated in their field of study. In that way, they have uplifted their community.

The Gawai Dayak festival, celebrated annually on June 1st and 2nd in Sarawak, Malaysia, is a significant harvest festival for the Dayak indigenous communities (including Iban, Bidayuh, Kayan, Kenyah, and others). It marks the end of the rice harvesting season and is a time for thanksgiving to the gods for a bountiful yield, seeking blessings for the new farming season, and fostering unity. Festivities include traditional rituals, open houses (Ngabang) where guests are welcomed with tuak (rice wine) and traditional delicacies, cultural performances like the Ngajat dance, and beauty pageants. It's a vibrant celebration of Dayak culture, heritage, and community spirit.

Frida Kahlo - the Mexican Iconic woman painter of the 20th Century.

One of the most iconic women painters of the 20th century is Frida Kahlo. Her impact on the world, both artistically and culturally, has been immense and continues to resonate today. Kahlo was one of those women icons who asserted her vision and identity in a male-dominated art world. She was born in Coyoacán, Mexico, in 1907.

At six years of age, she contracted polio, then at 18, a devastating bus accident left her with numerous injuries, that included a broken spinal cord, fractured pelvis and multiple broken ribs. During her excruciating recovery, she immersed herself into art and began to paint. She would often paint with a special easel her mother had made her while lying in bed.

Kahlo's paintings are far from conventional, are deeply introspective and relay her physical and psychological pain, highlighting her Mexican identity, her turbulent relationship with artist Diego Rivera, and delves into her experiences with love, loss, and femininity. Her paintings are a blend of realism and fantasy, Mexican folk art, pre-Columbian mythology, and Catholic iconography spoken through a distinct visual language which are deeply moving like the painting of The Sun and Life and Still Life with Parrot and Fruit.

At a glance, the paintings remind me a woman turning towards the Sun to light up her life. Whereas the Still life with parrot and fruit was a thirst wanted quenched through words. These are my interpretations and humble opinion. She is an iconic symbol that has brought forth the powerful voice of women to the fore.

I wondered at her pain and how she rose amid it all. How her self-portraits were honest and included her flaws. Through it all, I could see the beauty in her. She was a strong woman, who spoke up for feminine issues and has shaped Mexican art for its richness and complexity, and popularized it internationally.

Frida Kahlo's official cause of death listed on her death certificate was pulmonary embolism.

Her increasingly deteriorating health in her final years, her chronic pain, her struggles with depression, and a diary entry she made just days before her death read:

"I hope the exit is joyful — and I hope never to return — Frida."

When Frida Kahlo incorporated Catholic iconography into her work, she drew upon a familiar and deeply resonant set of symbols within her Mexican culture, which had a strong Catholic heritage.

What are your weekends like?

For writers, weekends gives them an added topic to write about. Most of them go about their weekend doing extraordinary things with their families. They go out, eat a lovely meal, do their grocery shopping and window shop. I am not sure about other writers, but I put in some hours writing and reading, reviewing books, since they have deadlines and basically continue a WIP. When I begin writing a story, I can't wait for it to end, so I spend time exploring and researching.

I look forward to visiting Mom on Saturdays. However, during the week, I do visit her since she is ill and see to her needs.

Going for mass first thing on Sunday mornings is a favorite thing to do, if and when the situation I am facing right now, allows me to.

Somehow, just thinking that it is a weekend, relaxes me. There is no schedule to adhere to most of the time.

What are your weekends like?

The Garden

There are pink roses blooming in the garden of a house where an aged woman who is ill lives. She was as gorgeous as the flower during her heydays. However, as time passed, and the storms of life took over, she was thrust into life's battles, and as she aged, her beauty began to diminish.

I thought I saw youth in her eyes when she smiled. Only it was gone in an instant - and was replaced by a blank stare instead. Her joy, short-lived, her eyes now projected pain.

Arthritis gnawed at her joints, a stark contrast to the effortless grace with which she once moved. Yet, as she gazed upon the entrancing blossoms, a flicker of that youthful fire returned to her eyes. The storms had battered her, but they hadn't extinguished her love for beauty. She was a testament to enduring strength, a fading rose, beautiful still in its quiet dignity.

The Garden was beautifully endowed with rose plants. Somedays the red ones bloomed, while the white ones were rare and few. However, when it did bloom, a butterfly came-a-calling. She said it was an angel in disguise, since it was white too. I looked out for the white butterfly when the white roses bloomed, but it never came by to fill me with the awe it did her. The butterfly came specially to uplift her spirits. On the days when it flew in the garden, she'd sit on her wheelchair and watch its antics from inside her room. She'd reflect on her garden with a view of roses. She'd forget the pain that bore her down.

She once told me, 'you can be wealthy, but if you don't have the health to enjoy your wealth, it will be worthless to you.'

Have a happy weekend everyone.

The Poetic Shift: The art of changing perspectives in one line.

A poet distills poetry by taking emotions, ideas, or brief, passing moments, and compressing them into powerful, meaningful lines.

The poet's main impactful repertoire is the 'poetic shift,' a deliberate pivot in thought, emotion, or perspective that will alter the reader's understanding and experience the poem according to the poet's interpretation. It is the moment to awaken poetic expressions.

Consider how a poem might begin. Does it begin in a peaceful environment, evoking tranquil moments, or immersing serene beauty, where the lines and imagery are soft and gentle. When the reader settles into a comfortable, scenic rhythm, a single line pops up to question, or provokes a stark, unexpected image - and the entire landscape of the poem is redefined. What was peaceful might then feel fragile, descriptive -  become symbolic, and what seems personal might highlight universal truths.

In my poem, A Revival, the lines, 'between the clouds and the sea / sunset adorned / captured with an adoring eye / a timeless vision,' establishes a scenic beauty that is profoundly admired. The use of language is appreciative, while the tone implies serenity. Here, the reader shares the poet's quiet awe.

    To be continued.

    Let's Write With Heart

When writing a story, it’s essential to grab the reader’s attention in the first few lines. Readers aspire to connect with the narration and characters portrayed almost immediately.

An engaging synopsis benefits reader engagement. Consider the sentient needs of a reader to connect them with your stories. A writer must first read their work with a critical eye for more precise understanding and strive for clarity before showcasing their craft to other readers. Describing emotions effectively in a story will depend on careful word and phrase selection.

A book must resonate with readers on multiple levels, both emotionally and intellectually.

In this regard, Emotional Quotient (EQ) helps writers in their craft. With a strong EQ level, writers can create a sense of connection with the reader, making the reader feel understood, moved, or engaged on an emotional level.

In essence, EQ is crucial for creating writing that connects with readers personally. A writer with high EQ can choose words, craft sentences, and structure narratives in ways that resonate with a reader's feelings, making the writing more impactful and memorable. A relatable emotional quotient (EQ) conveys empathy for a specific topic chosen for a book

“Charlie, here in our village, people are not educated because they prefer to live simply without gaining any knowledge through books. They believed that education complicated a man’s life and made him think outside the box. Anyway, they didn’t believe that you had to learn from books before you grew in wisdom. You grew in wisdom through experience. Even your father hates learning new things. He doesn’t believe he needs to learn how to read or write. He believes in passing down centuries old knowledge of farming to you, so you carry on the tradition of a farmer’s way of life.”

I devoured "The Heart's Journey" in one sitting, swept away by Majorie Yakob's luminous account of her 1929 odyssey to Calcutta. The author masterfully captures the protagonist's transformation from wide-eyed traveler to spiritual seeker. Her descriptions of India's landscape transported me completely—I could feel the monsoon rains on my skin and smell the spices in crowded marketplaces.
What elevates this narrative is its refusal to succumb to colonial clichés. Instead, we witness genuine cultural exchange as Majorie establishes her teaching mission. Her romance with Kincaid Roberts unfolds with beautiful restraint—their connection deepening against the backdrop of societal constraints.
The prose is exquisite without being pretentious, each sentence crafted with care. Days later, I find myself revisiting passages, searching for the quiet wisdom nestled between descriptions of "gorgeous landscape, culture and beliefs." A remarkable achievement.

When you put sand in a rice bowl...

    Someday you will be accountable.

Bad intentions = a life full of envy, distasteful conduct, jealousy, unkind words, and evil thoughts. People with bad intentions never have peaceful lives as they are always thinking of some form of disgusting actions to execute on an innocent being.

The bad news for these people are that the pie is for all to share and not singled out for them alone.

Imagine this, someone trying to make a living doing something they love, they are good in their craft/skill'chosen profession, and as they rise, they become a threat to the envious who view them with suspicion. The threatened, group together, exchange views with never a good word at the tip of their tongues for another, think up manipulative ways to bring that person down, destroy ambitions, gossip, and finally stab the concerned behind their backs. The main purpose is to cause harm or suffering to an innocent person.

Machiavellian: This term, derived from the political philosopher Niccolò Machiavelli, describes someone who is cunning, amoral, and manipulative in their pursuit of power or personal gain. This describes the people who put sand in someone's rice bowl.

It becomes a constant struggle for the person concerned since, in the first instance, they aren't aware that there are vicious people out there working against them.

The Machiavellians have many reasons to bring a person down in sly and deceitful ways.

Money being the great motivator, a tool for all evil intentions and acts, is mainly the weapon of destruction. Money to the ruthless will give them an edge over everyone. When money is exchanged, it becomes the fuel to power malevolent deeds.

The people who make use of other people for their rise, will never experience the satisfaction of having a fulfilled life. They will always be dependent on another's success, and their sincerity in relationships will always be questioned. Which is why truthfulness and genuine conduct will never be a priority in their lives.

I have always believed that 'what goes round comes around.' There are two things that matter to me: A good night's sleep, and a dignified death - hurting people in order to enrich my life is taboo. I'd rather read a book than gossip and make a complete fool of myself when the truth dawns of a person's innocence.

    Truth will surface someday.

    Thank you for reading.

What makes a writer stand out in a crowd?

A writer stands out in a crowd through a captivating blend of distinct voice, compelling storytelling, insightful perspective, and skillful execution. It's not just about stringing words together correctly; it's about crafting an experience for the reader that lingers long after the final page.

Here's a breakdown of what contributes to a writer's unique impact:

    • A Singular Voice: This is perhaps the most crucial element. A writer's voice is their unique personality and perspective expressed through their writing style. It encompasses word choice, sentence structure, tone, rhythm, and even the way they approach subjects. Think of it as their literary fingerprint. A strong voice feels authentic and immediately recognizable.

    • Compelling Storytelling: Whether it's fiction or non-fiction, a writer who can weave a captivating narrative draws readers in and keeps them hooked. This involves creating engaging characters, building suspense, exploring meaningful themes, and structuring the narrative in a way that resonates. It's about more than just recounting events; it's about crafting an emotional journey for the reader.

    • Insightful Perspective: A standout writer offers a fresh or profound way of looking at the world. They might shed light on overlooked aspects of human nature, challenge conventional wisdom, or offer unique interpretations of events. Their writing makes readers think, question, and perhaps see things in a new light.

    • Skillful Execution: While originality is key, a writer also needs mastery of the craft. This includes strong command of language, grammar, and punctuation, as well as the ability to use literary devices effectively (e.g., metaphor, imagery, symbolism). Polished execution allows the writer's voice and story to shine without being obscured by errors or awkward phrasing.

    • Authenticity and Passion: Readers can often sense when a writer is truly invested in their subject matter. Genuine passion and authenticity infuse the writing with energy and conviction, making it more engaging and believable.

    • Courage to Be Different: Standing out often requires a writer to break away from clichés and conventions. It means taking risks, exploring unconventional themes or styles, and not being afraid to challenge expectations.

    • Connection with the Reader: Ultimately, a writer stands out when they forge a connection with their audience. This can happen through shared experiences, relatable emotions, or a unique way of articulating universal truths. When readers feel understood or moved by a writer's work, it leaves a lasting impression.

In essence, a standout writer is someone who not only has something important to say but also possesses the unique ability to say it in a way that captivates, resonates, and leaves a lasting mark on the reader.
