Habemus Papam

 BBC NEWS

Peace be with you, too, Pope Leo XIV

The pivotal moment when the new pope was announced unfolded with the traditional signal of white smoke billowing from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel at 6:07 PM local time on Thursday, May 8, 2025. This visual cue sparked an immediate eruption of emotion from the tens of thousands of people gathered in St. Peter's Square. Cheers of "Viva il Papa!" (Long live the Pope!) resonated through the crowd as flags from around the world waved in anticipation.

Shortly after, Cardinal Protodeacon Dominique Mamberti appeared on the central balcony of St. Peter's Basilica to deliver the traditional Latin announcement, "Habemus Papam" (We have a Pope). He then revealed the identity of the new pontiff: Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who has taken the name Pope Leo XIV.

Pope Leo XIV is 69 years old and is the first-ever American Pope. The reaction from the crowd in St. Peter's Square upon hearing that the new Pope was an American was one of surprise, followed by enthusiastic cheers and applause. Many waved American flags, expressing joy and a sense of history being made. News of the first American Pope has also generated significant reaction in the United States, with many Catholics expressing surprise, joy, and eager anticipation to learn more about the new pontiff. World leaders have also offered their congratulations on this historic occasion.

The newly elected Pope spoke about building bridges. I think it is very important to build bridges in this era to bring about the peace we all crave to see around the world.

May God lead him with wisdom and courage to fulfil his duties and lead 1.4 billion Catholics to the right path - shobana.
